Never Been to The Gyno? Dr. Jessica Shepherd Shares Tips on TeenVogue.com
Going to the gynecologist isn’t exactly the most stress-free way to spend an afternoon, we’ll admit. But the more mentally prepared you are for your first visit, the less anxious you’ll be. So what actually goes on at the gyno? We asked Kellie Sereleas-Butler, MD, to share the total rundown and set your mind at ease.

When should I go?

Your first visit should happen when you’re between 13 and 15 years old, says Dr. Sereleas-Butler. You’re probably not even going to have to undergo a pelvic exam during this appointment—so think about it as a way to establish a baseline for your body, as well as a relationship with your new doc.

How do I find a good doctor?

The best way is to get a recommendation from someone you trust, says Jessica Shepherd, MD, a gynecologist and founder of herviewpoint.com. You could go to your mom’s doctor, or ask your pediatrician for a referral. Dr. Sereleas-Butler adds that you can also call a hospital and find a doc through their referral service. There’s also always public health clinics and resources like Planned Parenthood. The most important thing is that you feel comfortable with the doctor and able to have an open, honest conversation about your body and choices.
